Has anyone tried boiling their silicone toys to clean them? You can do this to silicone toys from more "mainstream" brands.

I have boiled my silicone toy from Zeta... and also BD. I have boiled for as long as 10 minutes... I have also ran them through a dishwasher cycle. minus the heated dry.

silicone toys are a giant polymer type material that has no melting point. however, depending on the manufacturer could have a degradation point (where the material starts to break down into its chemical components) but generally that is much MUCH higher than the boiling point of water.

in general, yes you can boil all silicone toys. but you dont need to boil them for too long to disinfect them n.n if you are concerned about distorting a toy, you can always 'dip' the non usable end into the boiling water and hold it there for a while and see if it damages it. Gel toys will melt in boiling water (or even really hot water) but generally silicone wont..

    hope that helped n.n

In regards to boiling silicone toys, yes, all ours can be.  However, I personally would recommend not having the toy actually touch the pot.
If you were to try to boil one of the gel toys, it would either deform or melt due to the low melting point.

When I have boiled the silicone toys, I will get the pot of water boiling. Then I will reduce the heat and wait a few minutes to allow the burner to cool, and set the burner to maintain the boil. That was, if the toy does touch the pan it will be much less likely to do damage.

As far as the gel toys, I have run them through a rinse cycle on my dishwasher and haven't had a problem. The water out of my tap is 120 degrees which I guess really isn't hot enough to kill anything, but the bleach takes care of that.

I am also aware of the putting Silicone toys in the dishwasher on the top rack only for cleaning them thoroughly. I do that occasionally with my other Silicone toys.

I boiled my boxie for 20 minutes and it did start out touching the bottom of the pan, it was just fine afterwards, no degrading or anything. the melting point of silicone is 500 degrees, sure as hell wont hit that with boiling water or even boiling all the water out and nearly burning the pan.

I got a pan hot enough on the stove to flash olive oil into flames... and that was only on medium heat.

Actually Bryo, that's exactly what I would expect to happen.  The "smoke point" and "flash point" temps vary between different types of oils (olive, corn, peanut, etc.)  But all of them will burn at much lower temps than the melt point of silicone.

The point I was trying to make if that if you have the right type of pan on the burner, and turn the burner on high heat... it is possible to achieve enough heat to melt the silicone. The flash point of canola oil is 620 degrees F.

well that shouldn't be an issue if no one tries frying their toys in olive oil. Grin

boiling water will never exceed 100C.
