After reading the forums a bit, it seems gel toys don't "live" as long as silicone ones? Does anyone have any input on this?

Mine have lasted me for over three years of light use. I think they've actually fared worse when I didn't use them for the while, 'cause the baby powder I stored them with got absorbed (or something) and they melted just a little. But it was quite minor, so it's not a big deal. One of mine has also changed colour over the years, and none of them look quite so shiny as when I got them.

Overall, though, I think you can count on the gel ones lasting for a good while if you treat them right. Purrsonally, though, I'm only buying silicone from now on!

In my experience, the gels require upkeep.  I didnt put baby powder/talc on mine and it went solid on me in 2 months.

Silicone will last indefinetely as long as you dont cut it, put a torch to it or something obviously neglectful.  Only exception to this one is using silicone lube.  That will likely melt the toy.

Silicone lube on silicone toy? I guess that it melts it makes no sense to me. Seems weird.

I'll probably go with silicone toys. :3

Definitely go silicone unless you like a design in gel and want it right away.  Brownbear is going to move the entire gel line-up into silicone.

As for it melting, it doesnt always happen.  Some people report no effects on their toys, but others say the next morning they have huge holes in it.

Looks like the gel toys I want are out of my price range at the moment anyway. Tongue I think those are a future order waiting to happen, especially once they're in silicone.

And holes? That sucks... a lot. X.X I'll definatly be trying my best to take good care of these.

Well, expect the prices to go up when they're in silicone since its a VERY expensive material.  A 44 gallon drum of silicone is the cost of a slightly new used car or a brand new 2009 ATV.

I know, but it seems like the better deal. Get a toy that last a good long time and is low maintenance compared to one that isn't. And I'm lazy and bound to screw up caring for a gel toy. X.X

My experience is different than some that are posted here.

My toys (gel) get used QUITE often (usually every 2 days on average, sometimes more or less frequently), my oldest one is over 3 years, and it's still quite usable.

The only problem with my oldest ones (the dragon and gryphon) is that they've cracked slightly at the tips.  You can easily see it on my gryphon toy, but not so easily on my dragon toy.

As far as my upkeep goes, I never put baby powder on them, and I store all of them wrapped inside a cloth of sorts.  All of them are touching, they've always been touching, and I've never had a problem with them "bleeding" or "causing the other toys to melt".

Yeah, the silicone in the lube interacts with the silicone in the toy and bad things happen. I did it once, accidentally, and this weird film formed over my toy that was a little difficult to get off. I've made a point of not doing that again! :p

Not being able to use silicone lube is really the only downside to silicone toys (well, besides the cost). I miss it most when I'm playing in the shower 'cause it seems to hold up better to water than anything else I have. On the plus side, though, they are compatible with oil based lubes, which is awesome. ^_^

Wow, that serious expensive. Apparently it's worth it, though, if BB's going to go all silicone. And we're going to support him Wink

And realistically, crunching some (very) loose, estimated numbers, it *looks* like silicone toys only cost about 25-35% more than the Gel here. That's based on a toy's volume, a difficult thing to estimate for such an irregular object without immersion measurements. I suppose I'd realistically expect somewhere more like 50% more, but Zeta still has great prices, compared to some other places online.

    silicone is ridiculously durable
i'm no expert but i'd say it practically never goes bad.
after all, i think silicone uses silicon, which is a primary element of glass (now don't think silicone toys have glass in them >_< that would hurt)
but just to point out how durable they are, yeah..

the gels as i understand it are more volatile, but you ought to follow the instructions. i've had mine for a few months now, and aside from some warping at the circular base, which gets handled roughly because of grabbing the toy, also the base's gel is thinner and easier to manipulate, the toy itself is practically the same as when i first got it. you have to wipe it clean after using it and store it with powder and close the container and store it somewhere dark/cool, like a cabinet or chest of assorted dirty toys LOL

ive had gel toys for over 6 years now and my original toy is still very much usable. it has become noticeably harder in the middle but still squishy enough to use. they toys ive had, have bled in the past, if you look at my rabbit you can see the different colored toys on it Tongue
now the silicone i love and will keep with because i can just throw my toys in a bag no maintenance needed other than cleaning and go to where ever i want to go or where ever i want to store them ^,~
