what are your thoughts on netbooks? besides being cute Tongue

on one hand ppl complain about them being slow, on the other theyre just as powerful as the cutting edge 4 years ago in 1/1000 the size.

and does anyone here have one? if so what kind? how do u like it?

    Netbooks?
If they come with a wireless internet card in it, be prepared to have a limit of 5 gigs.  Go over 5 gigs? It costs $80 per gigabyte over.

i'm not buying one with any sort of internet plan, i also plan on wiping the harddrive as soon as i get it and installing a version of linux i know isnt gonna do anything funny on me.

net storage always struck me as a really stupid concept. and even if the netbook i have only had 4 gig the version of linux i plan on using only takes up 100MB and is fully functional. tho most have 16 gig if its a SSD or 160 gig if its a regular harddrive

yeah, netbooks are the chibi laptops, the ones smaller then a piece of paper.

sorry to hear u don't like it. what are its specs? i can completely see hating one of the older ones. also i have small hands so smaller keyboards aren't too bad, just take a little adjusting...

edit: this is along the lines of what i'm thinkin of getting http://www.ecomelectronics.com/prodinfo.phtml?id=22651
i want one with a small harddrive because it uses a lot less power and i can fit my operating system and all the programs in less than a gig anyway.

    well this is about it

    Asus Eee PC 900

    Intel Mobile Celeron 900 MHz
    SO-DIMM (DDR 2) 1024 MB
    SSD disk 16 GB
    screen 8,9 Inches

a year old or so now, so I guess ya get alot better. think it's the first of Asus Eee series.
And in adition I have big hands, it's easyer too use touch screen full keyboard on my phone than typing on this tho for some reason ^^
Right now it's running Linux for Eee, some costum adjusted version for these computers. Windows XP as it is delivered with goes abit too slow for my taste Tongue

I prefer stationary computers anyways ^^ 2x 1tb WD Black hardrives, Velociraptor OS disk, Inter i7 950, 8 gb DDR3, Nvidia GTX280. yup now we are talking computer ^^
using that at home now a days, these laptops just cant compete, and the small ones dosent stand a chance ^^

    1.6 GHz > .9 GHz

and yeah i would never use windows on one of these...

windows expects a beefy machine and utilizes them badly... besides not being used to linux hows that run for ya? and what do u use it for (tho it sounds like u try to not use it Tongue)

edit: (yeah i should just know everything i plan on saying the 1st time) the netbook i posted has a full sized keyboard, most are like 90% normal size which i can see could thuroughly screw up typing esp if u type fast and aren't used to it.

hehe yeah and Celeron CPU aint exactly powerfull either Tongue
I was going too use it when outa office, lists of Nettwork stuff and things in there, testing nets, confguring switches and routers and sutch.
Juseasy too take with Tongue but it was too small and annoying so I just use one of the 3 other work laptops I got Tongue Mostly use a Dell one 17,2 inches widescreen, but have it in docking using 22" widescreen ^^
I think you cna safely say I'm not used too small computers. or old ones, I instanyl complains when something goes slow Tongue

Linux? naa not used too it and never used it before, but naa it's not that big a deal, pretty easy. works fine for it's purpose. alot better than the Mac OS Tongue imo

if its not too much trouble could you see if runescape loads? its an online game, java based. nothin to install. i know the high def version of the game wont work but if the low def loads ok then i'm sure ittl be playable with one of the 1.6 GHz ones....

if you're willin to check and hopefully already have java installed its http://www.runescape.com and then click on the "play it now" button on the main page. i just need to know if it loads properly, you dont need to sign up to play (tho it is fun, u should try it out, its free) if the login page comes up then it works Tongue

I have a ASUS EeePC 901. It is a 1.6 GHz Atom CPU with 1024 MB of RAM and 12+4 GB SSD. I have upgraded the memory to 2048 MB and installed ArchLinux on it. It's faster than with Windows and takes less space.

I like this cute netbook very much. It's much more portable than usual notebooks and thanks to the SSD, it is also very shock resistant and quiet.

Its primary use is www, e-mail, presentations, small games and as a graphical calculator. Since a netbook is much cooler than a desktop it also comes in handy, when it's very warm outside (like now - almost 30°C).

I'm writing this post on my netbook right now. Since I have rather small hands and fingers, the reduced keyboard size is not a problem for me. Also, the screen is a non-glare one, which I like very much.

for me the screen size is the biggest deterrent, my eyes just wont let me see that small of text, and if you expand the text out you loose your desktop >.>
i think they are cute and rather handy for using them on the fly and taking them with you without having a huge laptop bag with you. but just not for me i need the bigger screen ^,^

I personally do not like Netbooks.
Why? Simple. I expect a wide range of things i can do with my laptop: Gaming, Web-Browsing, Working for university ...

Net books are good for other ppl maybe as they are small and light weight, but do not offer enought power for me.

i tell people at work, they are good for the person that is going to be doing school work on them, or even just sitting around a cafe and drinking coffee while surfing the webs, but not really much more than that...
