I know what you mean, however, I have discovered that if you can squeeze the sides in just a little bit, that maybe the trick. Like you, I have come close several times! 

  I feel sorry for you guys,  I have tied with it and it's absolutly amazing.  I usually just ride the shaft but sometimes I tie with it, It does require both hands to do it, but once it's in I can't handle something that large staying in long.
